Sawtry has a proud history dating from Roman times. It sits on the edge of Fenland with wooded hillocks to the West and South West and the Fens to the East.

Surrounding areas are said to have hosted the highwaymen of old and carry evocative names: Moon Hollow, Moonshine Gap, The Old Bullock Road.

The area is largely agricultural with small pockets of light industry. Sawtry itself has a sizeable industrial and business estate.

A large community comprehensive school (with sixth form), junior and infant schools provide ample educational facilities. A pre-school nursery and three pre-school playgroups add to the facilities for the under fives.

Further educational opportunities are available in Peterborough and Huntingdon both only about 10 miles away.

Evening and day time classes are provided for adults at the community school and a youth centre provides activities and a focus for the young people of the village.

The elderly are cared for in a variety of ways. CARESCO organises day centres, lunch clubs and hospital transport and Mellors Court provides sheltered, warden-supported accommodation.
