Sawtry Football Club Last season saw the Sawtry Football Club Saturday team finish in 4th position in the Peterborough League Division 2. This was a solid achievement in their first season back after years in the wilderness, but they did enough to keep their heads held high over the summer months, and look to build on things ready for the new season. With consolidation achieved, the objectives for this forthcoming season had to be promotion and a good cup run. This season’s plans started badly. An ageing Sawtry team saw the retirement of two of its longest standing servants; Micky Husbands Bosworth and Shirley Bussey – talks are ongoing regarding their testimonial at the end of the season – tickets available upon application. Previous regulars Gary Darnell and Porky Carroll have also hung up their boots to concentrate on a career of drinking – a crying shame for players of such potential. The silver lining has been the emergence of a younger, fitter team, although this has since been depleted with a few young lads returning to University. The wizardry of Merlyn Gray will be missed. The village was in celebration at the return of Sawtry stalwart Jason Bohonis as Club Captain, and contract renewals of Sawtry regulars including James Davis, Andrew Neal and Matthew Rayson also caused a stir in the local press. Regular sick note PP Schofield also re-signed although this escaped the attention of the media. The start of the season saw a handsome 5-0 victory at home to Doddington, followed by victories against Peterborough Rovers and Real March. Unfortunately close defeats to the hands of local rivals Stilton, and Eye has left Sawtry a few points off the leaders. It all amounts to an exciting season ahead with the cup 1st rounds about to begin. Managed by David Chisnall and Sparky Holliday the Saturday team has maintained a high level of discipline, something missing from previous seasons. With good backing from budding photographer Colin ‘Percy Slater’ McFadyezean all of the action can now be caught on the internet web site ‘Facebook,’ under the group heading Sawtry FC – a must for all Sawtry lovers throughout the UK. The Sunday team will once again be playing in the Peterborough Sunday Morning League, in Division Two, under the guidance of Sunday manager stalwart, Dean Pawsey. Once again they will be sponsored by Heatforce, who we thank once again for their support. After their success at the end of last season by winning the Hunts Sunday Benevolent Cup for a second time in three seasons, the Sunday team have set themselves another season of high standards, but they are looking to focus their efforts on a league title assault. They have got the season off to a steady start with a 7-1 win over West Town, and a 4-4 draw with Brotherhood Works, but are suffering in getting their games played due to the league’s lack of referees. But we wish both the Saturday and Sunday team all the best for the coming season. Sawtry Football Club is always looking for new players to join, play or help either team in any way possible. Thanks to loyal support and sponsorship of the Saturday team from Dave and Sam at the Greystones, the team are the proud owners of new training tops and a new kit, and the future is looking bright. We must also thank Dave and Sam for their hospitality in holding the football club’s presentation night at the Greystones at the end of last season. However, there is always room for improvement and if you think you can help in any way please contact Dean Pawsey on his ex-directory number that is published around the village. Or, just come along and watch, your support would be appreciated. |
