SAWTRY CHORALE’S COMING OF AGE!

Dame Norma Major, Patron of Sawtry Chorale, joined choir members, families and friends for the choir’s 21st Birthday celebration concert and supper.

Formed in 1986 with just 18 members by Peter Davies, over the years the choir has grown in both numbers and reputation. It is an enthusiastic and friendly group, raising funds for local causes while promoting a love of good music, under the leadership of Musical Director, Shirley Allen. The choir meets every Wednesday evening in term time at 7.45 pm at Sawtry Community College. We welcome anyone new wishing to join, but are particularly on the look out for men to join our bass and tenor sections. There are no auditions and you do not need to be able to read music. Our repertoire is large and varied and includes classical and religious pieces, songs from the shows and popular songs.

Sawtry Chorale is now busy preparing for Christmas and the New Year so please come and join us at one of our concerts:-

8 pm Saturday 15 December at All Saint’s Church, Hamerton

7.30 pm Saturday 5 January at St Helen’s Church, Folksworth

For further information about the concerts or to join Sawtry Chorale, please contact Colet Patmore-Hill on 01487 831487 or Chris Wilson on 01733 243224.

DIGITAL: The Anglia TV region switches to digital TV in 2011

The process of digital switchover will take place between 2008 and 2012, TV region by TV region. The exception is Whitehaven, Cumbria, which became the first place to switch in October 2007. Switchover is a complicated process, and needs to be done in stages so that everyone in the country will be ready for it.

Switchover will start in the Anglia TV region in 2011. You need to make sure every TV set in your home is ready for switchover. You will be informed of the exact date 9 months before your switchover, you will also receive further information well in advance to help you get ready.

You could choose to switch now either by subscribing to Sky or by getting Freesat from Sky, for a one-off payment. Alternatively, a Freeview box will give you access to 18 digital TV channels and 5 BBC digital radio channels through your TV aerial.

If you are thinking about upgrading your TV or recording equipment now, make sure you buy one with the digital (tick) logo – see above.

Digital UK is the independent, non-profit organisation leading the process of digital TV switchover in the UK. Digital UK provides impartial information on what people need to do to prepare for the move to digital, and when they need to do it. For more information please visit

TREE WARDEN REPORT

National Tree Week will be over by the time of publication, and the irony is that hardly any trees are planted in that 'week' any more. The HDC tree nursery will not be lifting trees until the second weekend in December, and even than some trees may not have fully entered dormancy. Another sign of global warming. Perhaps the Tree Council should shift Tree Week into January!

I plan to replant a few shrubs, dogwood for colour, into The Maltings hedge where some of the beech has died. Also to tend to the trees planted last year at Bill Hall Way and the Fishing Lake. Then there will be some hedge cutting at the Cemetery to thicken it up.

At the Infants School there has been a delay in getting the soil from Woodwalton Fen, so things are on hold there for a few weeks. If you have a child at the Sawtry Day Nursery look out for details of their project to plant a willow structure in January.

Did you know…?

English Puritan leader Oliver Cromwell banned Christmas between 1647 and 1660 because he believed such celebrations were immoral for the holiest day of the year.

The definition of a white Christmas in the UK is for a single snow flake (perhaps amongst a shower of mixed rain and snow) to be observed falling in the 24 hours of December 25th.

The Christmas tree displayed in Trafalgar square in London is an annual gift to the UK from Norway since 1947 as a token of appreciation of British friendship during World War II from the Norwegian people.
