Sawtry is largely a "dormitory" village for commuters working in Cambridge, London, Bedford and Milton Keynes, all of which are no more than an hour away by road or train. Housing is very pleasantly set out and, following tree planting campaigns now starting to mature, a very relaxing effect has been achieved. Despite a large number of the population commuting, Sawtry has a very active social and community life.
