Those of you who were unaware Sawtry Workingmen’s Club had a Golf Society, the society was formed in the early 80’s by three or four very keen golfers who used to arrange their games at meetings at the club. This escalated as others began to enquire if they too could join the group or fill in as others dropped out. Gradually over a few years the numbers grew and eventually grew into the Sawtry Workingmen’s Club Golf Society as we know it today. Over the years the Society has over the years played in a number of competitions and matches like the annual CIU regional competition at Farthingstow and up until recently an annual match against the BRJ Club in Huntingdon. In June they played in a local derby match against Greystones. This match had been eagerly awaited and on the day 24 golfers of all standards and some dubious handicaps met at Mowsbury Park Golf Club in Bedford to do battle. The weather was glorious and produced some close fought matches many even going to the last. The match eventually concluded with Sawtry Workingmen’s Club Golf Society running out easy winners 8 ½ to 3½. This battle didn’t finish on the course and was continued back at the club where as Greystones carried out a post mortem on their defeat the club team celebrated a convincing victory with a few much needed beers. AUTUMN TROPHY Nineteen members turned up for the annual Autumn Trophy competition at Pidley. It was superb weather and great golf was had by all. The winner of the Autumn Trophy was Dave Gadsby with a net score of 70 playing off of 15 handicap. (soon to be 12) Longest drive went to Terry Clifton-Attfield and the nearest the pin was won by Andrew Henderson. Our next match is the Captain vs Chairman on Saturday 14th October at Orton Meadows.
