Tracing family histories

Finding bus timetables between Cambridge and Sawtry

New business listings

The latest request comes from Christopher Mulliss who writes, "I am researching the Mulliss family and I believe there may be members of the family living in an approximate post code area covering the village. I used to live in Houghton Conquest, Bedfordshire and so know the area quite well, although now live in Somerset.

The Mulliss family has been a bit disjointed historically and has never kept in touch and I appreciate people may not have the same interest in family history, nor want contact with a possible spurious distant relative.

The Mulliss family in the 1800s were based in the village of Prestbury, and later Cheltenham, in Gloucestershire and branches moved to Horsham in W Sussex and Bath in the early 1900s.

I am interested in any historical names - first names, relationships and possibly any copies (digital or photocopy) of old photos. I am happy that if there is a connection in your area and they have any information and do not want direct contact, they send anything perhaps via yourself or a third party."

A second request has come from Annie Brand (nee Burton) who writes, "I am researching my family history and wonder if you can help me. My great-grandparents William Burton and Ann Burton (nee Preston) had a Grocer's & Draper's shop in Sawtry as seen on the censuses for 1841 to 1911. William and their son John and daughter Mary were also Registrars. My first query is about their address(es) in Sawtry - variously given as High Street, Back Street and what looks like "Burtons Jetty" (although this has sometimes been transcribed as "Burlons Jessy" ! Was there a street or lane called "Burtons Jetty"?

My other query relates to the Sawtry gravestones. I wonder if anyone has made a plan of the graveyards or list of the memorial inscriptions? Two, possibly three, of their children seem to have died at a young age (Jabez, Lydia W & Henry) so I am wondering if their graves are in Sawtry?

I would be very grateful if you could shed any light on these queries.
